In Memoriam: Stanley H. Cohen

Caesar Rivise marks the passing of Stanley H. Cohen, who died on February 19, 2026, at the age of 91. Stan recently retired after an exceptional career spanning more than six decades with the firm.
A Philadelphia native, Stan graduated from Central High School (Class 198) and earned a degree in chemical engineering from Drexel University. He worked full‑time at the United States Patent and Trademark Office while attending George Washington University Law School in the evenings, graduating with honors in 1961. His law review article was later cited by the United States Supreme Court—a distinction that foreshadowed his distinguished legal career.
Stan joined Caesar Rivise in 1961, became a partner early in his tenure, and went on to serve for more than 20 years as managing partner. He earned a national reputation for his meticulous approach to intellectual property law, excelling in patent, trademark, and copyright litigation. He was especially recognized for his leadership in musical licensing matters, successfully representing Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) in more than 150 cases, and for securing landmark trial victories that helped shape modern IP jurisprudence.
Throughout his 60‑plus years with the firm, Stan was admired as a thoughtful mentor, trusted colleague, and model of professional integrity. His judgment, scholarship, and steady leadership contributed significantly to the culture and success of Caesar Rivise, and will remain an enduring part of our history.
