PIPLA’s Flagship Fall CLE Program Highlights Key Intellectual Property Developments

Staying current with developments in intellectual property law has never been more important for businesses, innovators, and legal professionals. At the inaugural Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association (PIPLA) Flagship Fall CLE Program held on October 22, 2026, attendees heard from experienced practitioners, professors, and members of the judiciary on a range of timely issues shaping the IP landscape.  Caesar Rivise’s Allison Tramontana delivered opening remarks as this year’s PIPLA President.  Attendees included members of the judiciary, USPTO personnel, professors, in-house counsel, and those in private practice.

The program featured five substantive panels addressing emerging legal trends and practical challenges that organizations face when protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights.

Trade Secrets: What Are Reasonable Measures to Protect?

Trade secret disputes continue to turn on a fundamental question: what steps did a company take to protect its confidential information? This panel examined the “reasonable measures” requirement and offered practical guidance for businesses seeking to safeguard valuable proprietary information, customer data, processes, and know-how.

Emerging Developments in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)

The rapidly evolving law surrounding name, image, and likeness rights continues to present new opportunities and challenges for athletes, educational institutions, sponsors, and businesses. Panelists discussed recent developments and the practical implications of NIL rights in today’s marketplace.

The Intersection of Antitrust Law and Intellectual Property

Intellectual property rights provide exclusivity, while antitrust law promotes competition. This panel explored the increasingly important intersection of these legal frameworks and examined how businesses can navigate competitive concerns while protecting innovation.

Skinny Labels and Induced Infringement Following Hikma Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. v. Amarin Pharma, Inc.

This session analyzed one of the most significant recent developments in pharmaceutical patent litigation. Panelists discussed the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision and its broader impact on the induced infringement doctrine and the use of skinny labels, providing valuable insight for innovators, generic manufacturers, and IP practitioners alike.

The President’s Panel: 2026 IP Year in Review

Moderated by Allison Tramontana, the closing keynote panel brought together distinguished speakers, including current and former members of the federal judiciary, professors, and those in private practice to have an in-depth discussion on major intellectual property developments from the past year and emerging trends likely to influence the future of IP law and practice.

A New Format for Engaging Discussion

This year’s program also marked an important evolution in PIPLA’s educational programming. Rather than a traditional monthly meeting format, the event was held at Convene at Two Commerce Square in Philadelphia and featured interactive panel discussions that allowed attendees to engage with presenters throughout each session.

The program included presentations from several federal judges, including Judge John Murphy of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, who participated in the IP Year in Review panel. The interactive format encouraged real-time discussion and provided attendees with greater opportunities to ask questions and explore practical issues facing businesses and practitioners.

Recognizing Outstanding Leadership

The success of the program was made possible through the efforts of the PIPLA Board and, in particular, Allison Tramontana, who planned, organized, coordinated, and moderated the event. Her leadership helped bring together an exceptional group of speakers and panelists and contributed to a program that delivered meaningful educational value to the intellectual property community.  More information about PIPLA can be found at www.pipla.org.
